Speaking at a briefing on February 5, the Chief Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Zhivko Kotsev, conformed that the detained police officer was suspected of espionage in favour of Russia. There may be other detainees in the case later, he added.
The officer's actions have been monitored for several months.
Police officer was arrested on suspicion of spying for Russia
The arrest took place after joint actions between the State agency for National Security, the chief Directorate for Combating Organised Crime, the Sofia City Prosecutor's Office and the Internal Security Directorate of the Interior Ministry.
"The arrested police officer is an employee of the Ministry of Interior who was under surveillance. I confirm - it is about spying. I will refrain from further comments. Most likely, after all procedural actions are completed, a special briefing will be given in Sofia," Kotsev said.
