In the recent days, there has been an increase in newly registered cases of coronavirus in Bulgaria. The country is at the peak of the third wave, the Minister of Health, Prof. Kostadin Angelov, said on April 1 at the beginning of the regular briefing on the Covid-19 situation in the country.

"For the last 2 weeks we have seen an increase in cases, and for the last few days we are at the top of the peak of the third Covid-19 wave in the country," said the Minister.

There is pressure on medical institutions, but is different compared to November and December last year. It is now mostly in Sofia, Bourgas, Varna and Shoumen.

“The biggest pressure right now is the pressure on people’s mental health,” Angelov said.

“Different people try to put pressure by using the fears and hopes of all Bulgarians. Let every Bulgarian citizen be calm, to know that the healthcare system is prepared. We have absolutely no worries,” he said.

According to him, the hope is in the growing number of vaccinated Bulgarians. However, the Minister also commented on the fact that we are the only country in Europe where people have access to a vaccine, get it and refuse to receive it because it is not the vaccine they have chosen.

"We expect to receive a sufficient amount of vaccines by the end of April and to enable people to make an informed choice for a vaccine," the minister reassured.

4,207 new cases of coronavirus were registered in the country in the past 24 hours from 17,947 tests. 10,093 Covid-19 patients are in hospitals, 772 are in intensive care units. 129 people died, 3,869 recovered.

There are 48,000 beds for active treatment in the country, the minister stressed. "A total of 11,956 medical professionals have tested positive for the virus since the beginning of the pandemic. Currently, there are 1216 active cases, of which 1,070 are on home treatment. 146 medical workers are in hospitals, 11 are in intensive care," he added.

Chief State Health Inspector Angel Kunchev said that on a 14-day basis, Bulgaria was 5th in the EU in terms of morbidity and 2nd on the Balkans. In terms of mortality, Bulgaria is 3rd in the EU after Hungary and the check Republic and 1st on the Balkans.

In Bulgaria, the districts with the highest morbidity for the past 14 days are Sofia-city, Silistra, Bourgas, Pernik, Vratsa, Varna. The least affected are the districts of Targovishte, Kardzhali, Vidin, Razgrad, Pazardzhik, Veliko Turnovo, Gabrovo.

The pressure was not like that in November and December, when there were complaints about people waiting in front of hospitals and insufficent capacity for hospitalisations.

The European Medicines Agency continues to evaluate the remaining vaccines, which are not yet authorized, said the executive director of the Medicines Agency, Bogdan Kirilov. These are the CureVac vaccine, the Novavax vaccine, the Sputnik vaccine and the Sinovac vaccine, the head of Bulgaria's medicines agency, Bogdan Kirilov told the briefing.

He said that about 700,000 doses of vaccines are expected to arrive in Bulgaria by the end of April, of which 350,000 will be RNA vaccines.

“By the end of June, we expect about 1.4 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine, nearly half a million of the Moderna vaccine, nearly a million of the Oxford vaccine and nearly half a million of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

He said that the medicines agency had received 1,442 reports of side-effects from the vaccines.

Bulgaria’s Minister of Health issues an order on easing of anti-epidemic measures from April 1

As of today, the measures against the epidemic in Bulgaria are gradually being relaxed. Open-air spaces, such as terraces and gardens of restaurants and cafes will re-open, with working hours from 6.00am to 23.00pm.

From April 1, cinemas, theatres, museums, galleries, libraries and circuses may re-open, but will be allowed to use no more than 30% of the capacity of the premises. The same applies to dance and music classes.

Visits to fitness centres, sports halls and clubs and swimming pools and complexes are allowed, using no more than 30% of their capacity and observing a physical distance of at least 1.5 m.

However, the easing of measures will not apply to big shopping malls. From April 1 to April 12, shops with a net retail area of more than 300 sq m, offering non-food products, are allowed to work with customers only in the open spaces adjacent to the retail outlet.

Discos, piano bars, variety bars and nightclubs remain closed until the end of April.
