On 25th of April, the police in the city of Rousse, North Bulgaria, disrupted a crime ring for trafficking migrants across Danube Bridge checkpoint on the Bulgarian-Romanian border. The crime ring involved a border police officer.
The alleged mastermind and the other members of the ring were arrested in Romania after they crossed the border checkpoint. Five foreigners were concealed in a minibus. Each was placed in a nailed up wooden box. The timely intervention of the police officers participating in the operation on the detention saved the migrants from suffocating because the boxes were lined with insulating material and wrapped in nylon.
The case was handed over to the Regional Prosecutor's Office in Rousse. If convicted, the suspects may face from 3 to 12 years of imprisonment.
