SAND SCULPTURE FESTIVAL IN BULGARIA’S ROUSSE

Talented international sand sculptors from Latvia, Lithuania, Japan, Russia and Bulgari have recreated the film characters of Indiana Jones, Marilyn Monroe and Charlie Chaplin. The sand sculptures are displayed at the pier in the Bulgarian city of Rousse, on the bank of the Danube River in the North East Bulgaria.

For a week, the globally recognized artists created 10 compositions dedicated to film art. Their “cinema hall” in the open air was the first edition of the International Sand Sculpture Festival in Rousse.

600 tonness of sand have been delivered on the bank of the Danube River for the creation of the compositions.

A panel of judges, including artists and architects, selected the winners. The sculpture of Marie Antoinette from the film directed by Francis Ford Coppola won the 1st place. The author is Donatas Moskos from Lithuania.

The winner of 2nd place was the sculpture of “Samurai” from Akira Kurosawa's film “Bodyguard”. The artist is Kapuhiko Chaen from Japan.

The award selected by the audience went to an artist from Rousse, Daniel Kanchev who created a composition with Charlie Chaplin and the character from his film “The Kid”, Marilyn Monroe and the figure from the first Bulgarian feature film “Bulgarian is a Gallant”.

The idea of the organisers is to make the festival an annual event and attract more participants. The authors say the life-span of the sculptures is short and will last until September.
