"Kapitan Andreevo" checkpoint at Bulgaria's border with Turkey was expanded with three new lanes for refrigerated trucks. This is expected to shorten the waiting time of the trucks at the checkpoint to 8 hours. Currently, the waiting time is 2-3 days.
Today, June 5th, an agreement was also signed with Turkey, at the checkpoint, to build a new railway link for the route Yambol - Elhovo - Edirne to ease traffic.
"Truck waiting time per day costs about 700 BGN. Given that 1 million heavy goods vehicles passed through this border crossing last year and 500,000 heavy goods vehicles since the beginning of this year to date, you can imagine what huge losses we are talking about. The direct losses alone amount to about BGN 2 billion," said Hristo Alexiev, caretaker Minister of Transport and Communications.
"These three new lanes will result in easier and faster processing of the trucks, which will make the road haulage companies, representatives of which are here among us, happy," said Aylin Sekizkök, Turkey's ambassador.
