‘BORROW’ A GRANDMA - 2015

For third consecutive year, the initiative “Take Me in Your Village” is taking place in the district of Gabrovo in Central Bulgaria, where older adults happily stand as ‘borrowed’ grandparents to ‘adopted’ grandchildren.

This year, young people will spend 5 days as guests in families in several villages in the area. They will get acquainted with local customs and traditions, will learn how to look after the vegetable gardens and help the grandparents with the chores.

The first ‘borrowed’ grandparents in the initiative were from the village of Novakovtsi. For third year in a row, the summer of older people will be more than fun, so the preparation for the new grandchildren starts early. However, the memories for the previous young guests is here to stay, says Roumyana Krusteva, who hosted children in the past two years.

Each family will host two grandchildren, aged up to 29. The procedure for registering of participants is still open. So far over 70 children from all over Bulgaria have applied and will be accommodated in families in seven villages in the district of Gabrovo. For the first time, children aged between 9 and 14 will have the opportunity to participate.

The project starts at the beginning of August.
