The elderly lady has fallen prey to a con artist posing as a laywer who told her that her grandson killed a man on a pedestrian crossing, was arrested and asked for payment to cover the cost for his release from custody
An elderly woman from Belene has become a victim of a telephone scam, the Ministry of Interior – Pleven said on September 8. The case dates back to September 6.
An unknown man called a 79-year-old woman, pretending to be a lawyer. He misled her into believing that her grandson drove a car that crashed and killed a man on a pedestrian crossing, after which her grandson was detained in police custody and the sum of BGN 25,000 was needed to get his release.
The man assured the 79-year-old woman that his wife was a prosecutor and would cooperate. Around 18.00 the woman collected 10,000 BGN and handed it over to a stranger.
Investigating police officer is working on the case. Pre-trial proceedings for fraud have been initiated by decree of the District Prosecutor's Office.
