BOYKO BORISOV: UNDER THIS CONFIGURATION, I DO NOT SEE HOW A GOVERNMENT CAN BE FORMED

After the exit polls, in a briefing in the headquarters of the party, Boyko Borisov, the leader of the centre-right GERB, thanked everyone who supported GERB to secure twice as many votes as its main opponent.

According to Borisov, the explanation for the low voter turnout were the tragic events of the recent week – the blast in the explosives factory in the village of Gorni Lom, in which 15 people died - the following national day of mourning - and the early termination of the pre-election campaign because of the circumstances. In his opinion, the explosion did not happen by accident and it had an influence on the elections.

Borisov said he wanted to wait for the final results to see the configuration of the parties in order to comment on possible coalitions. He underlined that GERB had a significant advantage over the other political forces. “All political leaders have to clearly reflect on their performance at the elections, because one cannot win 7-8% of the votes and claim to be the greatest”, he said. Borisov described the election result of the Reformist Bloc as “poor”.

The main problem of Bulgaria is the weak left-wing which was displaced by populist parties; their big and unrealistic promises reduced the weight of the left-wing, said the leader of GERB. He added that it became clear that Sergei Stanishev was not the problem of the centre-left Bulgarian Socialist Party, because even with a new leader, the performance of BSP at the elections did not get better, it got worse. Another problem was that the Movement for Rights and Freedoms and BSP had almost equal results in the elections and GERB stated many times that there was no way to govern in partnership with either of them.

Boyko Borisov firmly ruled out the possibility to give up serving as a Prime Minister for the sake of forming a coalition with the Reformist Bloc. (Leaders of the Reformist Bloc said during the campaign they were willing to join a GERB-led coalition on condition that Borisov agreed not to serve as Prime Minister).

“I want to say to everyone who thinks of me as being an obstacle, that it is normal for the winner in the elections to nominate the Prime Minister, who will bear responsibility, because s/he is the most-experienced person”, Borisov said. He proposed that everyone consider what would possibly happen if there were another two months of pre-election campaigning and a caretaker government and whether there would be any meaning to more elections. “We know each others’ telephone numbers, we can speak and discuss. This is my proposal to everyone”, he said.
