BULGARIA’S PARLIAMENT SETS UP COMMITTEE ON DRAFT AMENDMENTS TO THE CONSTITUTION

Bulgaria’s Parliament established an ad hoc committee, which will work on the proposed amendments to the Constitution. The committee includes 2 MPs from each parliamentary group and is chaired by Dimitar Lazarov, MP from the center-right party GERB. The deputy chairperson is Atanas Atanasov from the centre-right Reformist Bloc.

It is expected that the amendments to the Constitution will pave the way to the judicial reform.

They are focused on the functioning and on changing the composition of the Supreme Judicial Council. The idea is to divide it into two colleges – one overseeing judges and one overseeing prosecutors and investigators. The judges college will consist of 13 members and the prosecutors college will consist of 12.

The changes also envisage the term of office of the Supreme Judicial Council to be reduced to 4 years.
