Bulgaria was sentenced by the European Court of Justice for failing to fulfill its obligations under the provisions of the Directive on ambient air quality and cleaner air in Europe.
The European court in Luxemburg issued a judgment on 5th of April regarding the case initiated by the European Commission against Bulgaria over poor air quality.
The EU court decided that Bulgaria failed to fulfill its obligations under the EU legislation by exceeding the daily and annual limit values for particulate matter concentrations systematically and continuously from 2007 until 2014 inclusive in the zones of Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna and North Bulgaria, South-West Bulgaria and South-East Bulgaria.
The court explained that for the time being no fine has been imposed on Bulgaria.
