Bulgaria’s presidential election has produced no outright winner, and the country’s next head of state will be decided in a run-off, the Associated Press reported.
Against a backdrop of record-low voter turnout, which observers attribute to widespread distrust of politicians and the resulting voter apathy, a highly polarised contest between two radically different political visions is set to take place on 1 November.
Bulgarian President Iliana Iotova took the lead but failed to secure an absolute majority according to exit polls, meaning she will face her pro-Western rival Andrey Gyurov in a runoff, the DPA reported.
It remains to be seen whether Gyurov will be able to attract additional votes in the second round, and how many. The 50-year-old candidate is backed by the reform-minded liberal-conservative opposition. It is also unclear how votes cast for the eliminated candidates will be distributed in the run-off. Yotova, 62, a former MEP from the Socialists’ group, has held Bulgaria’s highest state office only since late January, when Rumen Radev resigned as president to run in the early parliamentary elections, DPA added.
If Iotova wins, she will become Bulgaria’s first woman to be elected president, Reuters reported.
Without questioning Bulgaria’s membership in the EU and NATO, Iotova has criticised the continued military aid to Ukraine and called for negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv amid the increasingly tangible consequences Bulgarians are experiencing from the war taking place in close proximity to their country, Agence France-Presse noted.
The election campaign focused largely on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the expansion of hostilities in the Black Sea, where recent drone attacks on merchant vessels off the Bulgarian coast have heightened security concerns in the country. The candidates also sought to address public anxieties over rising energy prices and inflation, as many families, particularly in rural areas, struggle to make ends meet, the Associated Press also reported.
