Drunk and drugged drivers will be prosecuted for intentional crime if they cause death

The Prosecutor’s office has zero tolerance for all drivers who have used alcohol and drugs and caused serious road accidents with fatalities, Acting Prosecutor General, Borislav Sarafov, said at a meeting with parents and relatives of people killed in serious traffic accidents on September 20.

"Anyone who used alcohol and drugs and caused death will be held accountable for a deliberate act," Sarafov assured the relatives of the victims of the "war on the roads.

The Prosecutor General expressed his sympathy with the grief of the relatives and reaffirmed the commitment of the Prosecutor's Office to prevent road traumatism and support future legislative amendments to reduce serious traffic accidents.

Borislav Sarafov stressed that the Prosecutor's office also supports all initiatives aimed at improving the training of young drivers. During the meeting, the problems related to expert assessments and their timeframes were discussed. The relatives of those killed in serious traffic accidents expressed the opinion that causing accidents due to driving at a speed far higher than the speed limit should also be considered a serious act.

The Acting Prosecutor General recalled the methodological instructions issued by him a few days ago to prosecutors across the country in connection with the recent amendments to the Penal Code on transport crimes. They concern the timely collection of evidence in pre-trial proceedings about the vehicle used to commit a crime by a driver who has consumed alcohol or drugs, as well as the measures prosecutors can take to secure the seizure of vehicles and the penalty of a fine.

The meeting was also attended by Deputy Prosecutor General Mariya Pavlova and Head of the Analytical Department at the Supreme Cassation Prosecutor’s office Nikolai Georgiev. The meeting was held at the Court Chamber in the capital on the initiative of the families of victims of road traffic accidents, the Prosecutor's office recalled.
