The rain that fell this morning, December 3, brought almost all of the coastal city Varna to a standstill. Many residents were unable to reach their workplaces on time. Long queues of cars and severe traffic jams left drivers frustrated.
The downpour caused large pools of water to form along the city’s main boulevards, blocking traffic. Kilometre-long queues built up on the major routes. The Varna branch of the Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology reported that the 20 litres of rainfall per square metre were not unusual for the season, but the city’s drains were unable to cope.

Traffic jams occur in Varna after almost every heavy rain. The Varna Municipality reported three alerts regarding serious flooding. The underpass at the intersection of Vasil Levski and Knyaz Boris I boulevards was flooded, as was a stretch of road near the roundabout at the “Pochivka” stop. Part of a street in the Asparuhovo district was also under water. The Municipality added that measures had been taken to drain the affected areas.
