Todor Karaivanov, the Head of Svilengrad Customs House in the South-East of Bulgaria, close to the border with Turkey and Greece, has been detained while taking a bribe. He was arrested on 28th of January about 19.30 in an operation carried out by Bulgaria’s State Agency for National Security (SANS). According to eyewitness he was kept handcuffed on the ground for about an hour.
Within 30-40 minutes, Karaivanov received two bribes - the first at the amount of 600 BGN and the second at the amount of 600 euro, the investigation identified. The Head of the Customs House was detained at the time of receiving the second bribe. He resisted the arrest.
Karaivanov’s office in the Customs House was searched, where the 600 BGN bribe and 12,000 Euro were found.
6,000 BGN and 3 sacks with customs documents were found in Karaivanov’s home.
Karaivanov will be facing charges and will be detained for 72 hours on the basis of prosecution decree. An application will be filed for his permanent detention.
