Dozens of alerts were received on the emergency lines in Plovdiv because of the strong wind on March 28. Uprooted trees, crushed cars and fallen roofs are part of the damages in the district. All emergency teams are on the ground.
A tree fell on a 64-year-old man in a street in Plovdiv, Southern Bulgaria, Ministry of Interior said. He was walking on the pavement when a large tree fell on him amid powerful winds.
An ambulance team pulled out the man, who had an open fracture of one leg and injuries to his head and waist. The injured man will be operated on at the Clinic of Orthopaedics and Traumatology at "St. George" University Hospital in Plovdiv, the hospital said. His general condition is good, a number of tests have been done.
The high winds in Plovdiv blew off the roof of the fodder factory in Belozem. More than 20 employees work there, there were no injuries only because the incident happened in off-hours.
The fallen roof crushed the raw material warehouse. The workshop is insured. Footage on social media shows that the speed of the hurricane winds was exceeding 100 km per hour. A flying roof nearly caused serious accidents at rush hour on Plovdiv's ring road.
The wind knocked the insulation off a block of flats renovated three months ago. Heavy plaster fell on a playground.
"There were about 15 children playing in this area where the insulation fell. Thank God they went home when the wind started to blow," said director Borislava Vicheva.
The residents from Block 11 gave BGN 2,800 per apartment for the insulation. One of the people from the block made the arrangements for the worker who put the insulation. The neighbours say they have no signed contract and therefore no guarantees.
Dozens of cars were damaged by the downed trees and branches. Trains stopped running for several hoursbetween the Central Station and Filipovo Station due to the high winds.
