A national conference on the fight against human trafficking brought together experts from various institutions on January 26. During the forum, good practices were discussed, as well as measures to combat this type of crime. The host of the conference is Bulgaria’s Deputy Prime Minister, Mariya Gabriel. During the event, it became clear that human trafficking affects millions of people around the world, regardless of their gender, age and nationality, and cooperation between different institutions is among the main mechanisms of combating it.
"Poverty, poor living conditions, unemployment, military conflicts, instability, low level of education, these factors influence human trafficking. My message is to eradicate the root causes of the crime," Mariya Gabriel said.
"The ways of committing this crime are becoming more and more diverse, which requires a quick and adequate institutional response. We observe a similar trend in the smuggling of migrants - a crime closely related to human trafficking. Experience shows that criminal groups often engage in with both types of criminal activity generating huge profits," added Minister of Interior, Kalin Stoyanov.
