Over 500 people died in road accidents last year. Of these, 29 were children. This is according to the data of the National Statistical Institute (NSI) and the Ministry of Interior.
Sofia-city and Plovdiv districts have the highest traffic-related death rate - over 40 people. These districts are also leading in the ranking of number of accidents with road deaths.
The largest number of road accidents was reported in the capital Sofia- nearly 9,000. Next are Varna and Plovdiv with more than 2,000 accidents for the year and Burgas with more than 1,600.
Statistics show an increase in the number of injured by almost 9% or a total of more than 8,400 people compared to a year earlier.
There was a 5% drop in fatalities. The main cause of the crashes are the wrong actions of drivers and high speed.
