For fourth consecutive day, several regions in South Bulgaria are still in a state of emergency due to the heavy snowfall. Most difficult is the situation in Smolyan and Kardhzali.
Over 270 relief and rescue operations were conducted on 9th of March in the affected areas, the press cente of the Bulgarian Ministry of Interior said.
Over 600 villages in Bulgaria remain cut off from electricity supply as the heavy snow brought down electricity poles and broke power lines.
Power supply was restored last night, 9th of March, in the towns of Smolyan, Chepelare, Pamporovo and Laki. Road conditions are still difficult in the regions of Haskovo, Smolyan and Pazardzhik.
Teams are working to remove fallen trees. 17 people remain blocked in “Hristo Smirneski” hut in the region of Youndola in Rila mountains. Food, power generator and fuel has been provided to them. The efforts to break through the snow on the road to the hut continue. A rotor-type snow plough is used.
The Bulgarian Ministry of Environment warns that floods may be possible in the South-East of the country following the heavy snowfall.
