Heavy rain, snow and strong winds over the weekend have caused serious disruptions in the East and South of Bulgaria. Rivers overflowed and many homes were flooded.

On 2nd of February, several municipalities in Bulgaria continue to be in a state of emergency after the flooding. The situation remains complicated in the Black Sea coastal districts of Varna, Bourgas and Dobrich in the East of Bulgaria and in the district of Smolyan in the South of the country, the Ministry of Interior’s “Fire Safety and Protection of Population” unit told BNT.

The search for the 3 missing people who were swept away by the downpours near the South Bulgarian towns of Petrich and Devin is on-going.

According to initial estimates of the Bulgarian Road Agency, the costs for the repair of roads damaged by the floods will amount to over 10 million BGN.

Most affected by the floods are the roads in the districts of Smolyan, Bourgas, Varna, Dobrich, Kardzhali and Haskovo. The bad weather have triggered landslides and caused risks of falling stones.

dylgopolThe situation is gradually getting back to normal, but the river levels remain high. Many municipalities in East and South Bulgaria continue to be in a complicated situation.

The water levels of rivers and dams are under constant monitoring, the Minister of Environment, Ivelina Vassisleva said on 2nd of February for the BNT morning programme. Two and a half billion BGN are allocated this year under the Operational Programme “Environment” to improve the water infrastructure in Bulgaria, she added.

On 1st of February, state of emergency was declared in the South Bulgarian municipalities of Smolyan, Devin and Dospat because of the strong wind and the heavy rain. Roads were flooded.

Over 200 litres of rain per square metre poured down in the South Bulgarian region of Kardzhali over the weekend. The torrential rain and the strong winds caused power outages, road closures and left many households without electricity and water. Many buildings have been flooded. Landslides have been triggered.
