The 51 year old Plane (Platanus) in the centre of Archar village, Vidin region has been put forward as Bulgaria’s entry into the European Tree of the Year 2015 competition. 14 trees from countries around Europe are taking part.
The plane is now 15 metres tall. It stands big and strong in the square of Archar village thanks to the care and love of the local people.
It is looked upon as a friend, a brave fighter and a guardian of the people from the village. The plane is part of their life and an everyday witness of local events. Every year it greets the first graders who enter the local school and bids goodbye to the graduating students. On Sundays, It casts its friendly shadow over the visitors to the weekly market. It attends the traditional "Ilinden" Archar Fair as a most renowned guest and also takes part in all festive events.
On her Facebook page, EC Vice-President, Kristalina Georgieva, calls for people to vote in the initiative.
