Two serious road accidents with fatalities occurred on Sofia’s Northern Bypass in the early hours of the morning. The first happened at around 02:00 on December 1.

A lorry with Serbian registration struck a 61-year-old man who was on the carriageway; he died at the scene.

Police patrols cordoned off the area.

Shortly after 04:00, a car travelling at very high speed collided with a police patrol vehicle.

A 42-year-old Interior Ministry employee was killed in the impact.

Alcohol and drug tests on the driver who caused the crash were negative.

Traffic in the area was severely disrupted this morning, with queues of vehicles forming in the direction of Botevgradsko Shose.

Commissioner Vladimir Ivanov, Deputy Head of Traffic Police at SDVR:
“Tests were carried out and were negative for alcohol and drugs.”

BNT: “At what speed was he travelling?”

Ivanov: “We have not yet established the speed. We cannot say.”

BNT: “But was it high?”

Ivanov: “According to the other officer, yes – high speed. Pre-trial proceedings have been initiated, and the driver who caused our colleague’s death has been arrested.”
