New and unique finds from the ancient Thracian city of Perperikon were presented by the archeologist prof. Nikolai Ovcharov.
He showed a coin from the reign of Tsar Ivan Alexander from the year 1343, which indicates that at that time there was a Bulgarian military campaign in the Eastern Rhodope mountains. Its aim was to take back lands lost from Tsar Kaloyan.
The second unique find in Perperikon is an iron cross from a religious banner (khorugv).
Perperikon is an ancient archaeological complex located in the Eastern Rhodope Mountains and 15 km north of the city of Kardzhali in the South of Bulgaria. It is entirely carved into the rocks and is one of the oldest monumental megalithic sites in Bulgaria. The sacred rock city is believed to have been the site of sanctuary of God Dionysus.
