The murder of Alexey Petrov should not be confused with Bulgaria's accession to Schengen, which has its own trajectory and clear rules. This is how European Commission spokeswoman, Anitta Hipper, on August 17 responded to a question about how this case will affect Bulgaria's accession to the free movement area.
So far, two member states - the Netherlands and Austria - are vetoing Bulgaria's enrty. The Netherlands cites organised crime and corruption in the country as a motive.
Hipper recalled that the Commission's position has been unchanged for a long time. For 12 years we have been saying that Bulgaria and Romania are ready for Schengen, she stressed.
She expressed the expectation that this year the Council of the EU will take a decision to make them full members.
