GERB Leader Boyko Borissov: I Insisted on This Resignation

“Rosen Zhelyazkov’s statement was brilliant. He ensured that over these 11 months there is nothing for us to be ashamed of,” said Boyko Borisov, leader of GERB, following Prime Minister Zhelyazkov’s announcement of the government’s resignation on December 11.

“GERB brought Bulgaria into Schengen, and to ensure we were not sidelined, I insisted on this resignation. Because, when you have a problem with children or your parents, the easiest thing is to scold them or tell them they don’t understand. But if you sit down and explain carefully, they understand. These children in the square — they are our children. Why would we be upset that they have dreams?” Borisov asked.

“The square is a celebration for them, if you remove those wearing masks,” he added, congratulating the Ministry of Interior for its work during yesterday’s protest.

“I cannot find a single mistake in the important things we have done. Record-breaking investments. When sanctions came, the government dealt with the situation well. The refinery is operating. We did everything to be brilliant.” Borisov noted the irony of fate — the historical leaders present on the square were not involved in any significant decisions.

He said he had one remark for the Prime Minister: “We cannot be angry with our children. We must point the finger at those responsible — Radev, Vassilev, Denkov.”

Borisov stated he is proud of GERB for maintaining a good tone and added that “no more budgets will be passed by the current government. No one will ride on my back again.”

“Tomorrow this should be concluded, and I tell them now — there will be no re‑formatting. After their cunning manoeuvres, theirs will not pass. No one will ride on my back again.” He added,

An outgoing government does not work — everyone knows that. What will happen next for Bulgaria, only God knows,” said Boyko Borisov.

“We will strive to win the elections because we are the best,” the GERB leader added.

“You have done a tremendous amount of work. Now we will watch from the sidelines to see what these know‑it‑alls will do. Don’t be upset with the people. We will stay in shape and move toward success again. I thank everyone from the protest — you did a golden job for me,” Borisov said.

The GERB leader explained that “during this period we will help prevent price increases, but people need to know — an outgoing government no longer functions.”

“And everything I warned about… That is why I requested this 20‑day extension, but they did not even agree to that. Vassilev and his team must bear the responsibility.”
