The government has set up working groups that are working on overcoming the various possible risks for Bulgaria related to Russia's military operation in Ukraine, incuding securing gas supplies and cyber security, Bulgaria’s Prime Minister, Kiril Petkov, said after an operational meeting of the Council of Ministers on February 24.
The Prime Minister appealed not to create panic in Bulgaria. For the moment there is no direct risk of military action against Bulgaria. He once again condemned Russia's actions and said that Bulgaria is a firm EU and NATO partner.
"The Bulgarian government strongly condemns the aggression by the Russian Federation towards Ukraine. We see that it is unprovoked by the Ukrainian side and the fact that they are doing it on such a serious scale, for us it is unacceptable to tolerate such actions on the territory of Europe," Petkov said.
So far 120 Bulgarian citizens have requested evacuation from Ukraine. Bulgaria is opening three points for Bulgarians who want to come to Bulgaria. Bus transport is being organised and the possibility of flights from Poland is being considered.
We are also working on the possibility of welcoming Ukrainian citizens on the territory of Bulgaria, Kiril Petkov said.
Earlier this morning, President Rumen Radev convened a meeting of the institutions, which was attended by Prime Minister Kiril Petkov, Parliement Speaker Nikola Minchev, cabinet ministers and members of the leadership of the services and the Bulgarian army.
After the meeting, the Head of State said that more than 4,000 people have requested Bulgaria's evacuation from Ukraine and that our country is also open to Ukrainian citizens seeking asylum.
