The Prosecutor's Office on September 26 issued a position on the indictment of five Bulgarians detained for espionage in the UK.
The five Bulgarians charged in the UK with spying for Russia remain in custody
"In March 2023, the Sofia City Prosecutor's Office opened pre-trial proceedings for alleged espionage. The State Agency for National Security (SANS) has been tasked with carrying out certain actions in the case by order of the supervising prosecutor," the statement says.
Measures have been carried out both with regard to establishing the activities of the persons detained in the United Kingdom and of other Bulgarian citizens who are on the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria and are directly relevant to the overall detection of criminal activity.
The joint work with the British partners is of significant importance in the process of counteracting criminal violations affecting the national security of the Republic of Bulgaria and the country's international standing. In the process of pre-trial work, the Prosecutor’s office and SANS are in direct contact with the British partners."
