The Thracian Sanctuary in Mishkova Niva in the region of Malko Tarnovo is among the 11 monuments and sites of Europe shortlisted for “The 7 Most Endangered” programme for 2014. The leading European heritage organisation Europa Nostra and the European Investment Bank Institute prepares the shortlist. The final list of the 7 most endangered sites for 2014 will be unveiled during the European Heritage Congress on 5 May in Vienna.
The complex “Mishkova Niva” is located 4 km away from the town of Malko Turnovo, close to the border with Turkey. It dates from the 5th to the 3rd centuries BC and is the most prominent monument of the ancient Thracian culture. It was discovered in the 80-ties of the past century. In 1986 it was announced to be an archeological monument of culture of national significance. Now the complex needs urgent restoration.
The Mayor of Malko Turnovo, Iliyan Yanchev, says that restoration works so far have been either partial, or which is even worse - no restoration has been done. At the moment the monument looks in a very bad condition.
The nomination by Europa Nostra gives hope that this ancient monument of cultural importance for Bulgaria and Europe, dating back from the 5th century, will be preserved. It is constructed of marble blocks, carved in an impressive manner, which is an exceptional characteristic of the Thracian culture.
Veska Todorova adds that the complex is visited by a large number of tourists, nearly 2000 per year. Many of them are foreigners, who come to especially see this magnetic place, but see derelict ruins instead.
If at the beginning of May, Thracian Sanctuary in Mishkova Niva area is selected as one of the most threatened landmarks, it will have the opportunity to receive financial assistance for restoration.
