Assen Vassilev: This government has no moral right to govern the country anymore
The decision to withdraw next year’s draft budget is a belated tactical step, we want the resignation of the cabinet. That was the message delivered at a briefing by “We Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria” (WCC–DB).
Assen Vassilev - Chairman of "We Continue the Change":“The protest was peaceful and it ended peacefully. The large march, which moved along Dondukov Boulevard and down the full length of Vitosha Boulevard towards the GERB headquarters, passed without a single incident. The ugly scenes we witnessed were caused by provocateurs and organised groups, while the Ministry of Interior stood by and failed to react. Attempts to turn the protest violent remained confined to the area outside the MRF headquarters.”
Vassilev added that there had been “a major problem” when the centre of Sofia suffered a power cut along the route the demonstration was meant to take.
“But the march was rerouted and avoided being bloodied,” he said.“We saw that the government heard the protest this time and is withdrawing the budget. This could all have been avoided had it been done last week. Now it is too late. We heard the people on the streets – they want the resignation of this government and the departure of Borissov and Peevski from Bulgarian politics. We fully support them.”
“Our message to both Borissov and Peevski is very clear: resign, because this government no longer has the moral authority to govern the country. We saw enough people across Bulgaria who want new elections, and that opportunity must be given to them. If the government does not resign this week, we will table a vote of no confidence, and together with all citizens who protested – and those who support this idea – we will collectively demand the cabinet’s resignation.”
If submitted, the vote of no confidence will target the overall policy of the Council of Ministers, WCC–DB said.
Bozhidar Bozhanov, MP from WCC–DB:
“Withdrawal of the budget is a belated tactical step. This government, with this parliamentary majority, cannot produce a different budget because it is entirely captured by Peevski.”
According to WCC–DB, Delyan Peevski was behind the provocations witnessed in central Sofia.
