The Bulgarian government has nominated UNESCO’s Director-General, Irina Bokova, for the post of Secretary General of the United Nations with a five-year term of office, from 1st January 2017 to 31st Dec 2021.
The motives for the nomination include Irina Bokova’s high international reputation as a career diplomat and the positive assessment of her work as UNESCO’s Director-General.
In 2009, Bokova was elected Director-General of UNESCO and was the first woman and Eastern European to head the organisaton since its founding in 1945.
In 2013, she was re-elected for a second term as UNESCO Director-General.
Previously she was a Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria and was a former ambassador to France and Monaco.
