The process remains irreversible despite the political situation in the country
The decisions on Bulgaria’s admission to the eurozone have already been adopted and remain in force. This was stated today by a European Commission spokesperson in response to a question on whether recent events in Bulgaria could affect the country’s entry into the eurozone on 1 January.
According to the spokesperson, Bulgaria has already met all the requirements for joining the eurozone and all the necessary decisions have been taken. This means that the process remains irreversible despite the political situation in the country and the demand by ''Vazrazhdane' that Bulgaria’s adoption of the euro be postponed by one year.
Balázs Ujvári, European Commission spokesperson:
“The situation is very clear. There were a number of criteria that had to be met, and Bulgaria has met them. All the key criteria have been fulfilled, all the relevant decisions have already been taken, and it follows from this that as of 1 January next year Bulgaria will adopt the euro.”
