MECH Leader Radostin Vassilev after the Cabonet Resignation: Now is the Time for President Radev to Step Onto the Field

“I will not hide that we were somewhat surprised by the government’s decision to resign. But it was expected, because they could not ignore the voice of the streets,” said Radostin Vassilev from Morality, Unity, Honour (MECH) party on December 11 after the resignation of the government.

“In the current National Assembly, we do not see any possibility of re‑forming a governing majority. And if such a majority were to be assembled with a mandate from GERB, it would amount to a major betrayal of the expectations of the protesters.”

The leader of MECH said that “the government was not brought down by the opposition, but by civil society.”

“They did what we from within could not do,” he said. He added that the ublic expect elections in which “Peevski and Borissov are kept out of government.”

“We at MECH view Rosen Zhelyazkov’s action as a serious provocation towards the citizens and as retaliation for what they expressed in the streets.” MECH representatives said they want elections as soon as possible and declared their support for fully machine‑based voting.

Radostin Vassilev was unequivocal that “we would neither support nor take part in any government that includes Borissov or Peevski.”

“So I hope that, after the next elections, those of us political leaders who survive will be able to form a government against these two individuals. Ivelin Mihaylov will not be there after the next elections. 'There Is Such a People' and the Bulgarian socialist Party (BSP) will not be there either. So our choice will be narrowed to other candidates.”

“Expect surprises,” Vassilev said, adding that “now is the moment for President Radev to step onto the field — and we expect him to appear on the political field.”
