The representatives of Vazrazhdane put up a banner in the hall in defense of the Bulgarian lev
With 135 votes against, on December 3, MPs rejected the President’s proposal to hold a referendum with the question: “Do you agree that Bulgaria should adopt the single European currency, the euro, in 2026?”
President Submits Proposal to Parliament for a National Referendum on Euro Adoption
The question was tabled to the plenary by Vazrazhdane party, after the Constitutional Court ruled that former National Assembly Speaker Natalia Kiselova had wrongly not allowed the question to be considered by MPs.
The current Speaker of Parliament, Raya Nazaryan, announced that she had referred the question to the relevant committees immediately after the Constitutional Court’s decision was published in the State Gazette. However, the report of the lead committee — the Legal Affairs Committee — was still not ready by today.
MPs began debating the item only at 11:20 a.m., following three consecutive breaks. Before that, they had been waiting for representatives of the Presidency to present the Head of State’s reasoning for holding the referendum. No representatives arrived, and the debate proceeded. Members of Vazrazhdane played a central role, even unfurling a banner in the chamber in defence of the Bulgarian lev.
