PM Denkov from Athens: Bulgaria and Greece have excellent strategic relations

In a meeting in Athens on January 4, the Prime Ministers of Bulgaria and Greece, Acad. Nikola Denkov and Kyriakos Mitsotakis, discussed infrastructure, transport and energy.

Bulgaria and Greece have excellent strategic relations, the Bulgarian Prime Minister said. He focused on the projects of interest for both countries, including in the context of the development of vertical transport and energy connectivity along the North-South axis.

"There are opportunities to speed up and complete some of the documents under discussion in the next few months. The main objective is to see how we can accelerate progress and achieve final results in the coming months," the Bulgarian Prime Minister stressed.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasized the connectivity between Greece and Bulgaria in transport, energy and digital communication.

"It is important to build upon the successful trilateral discussions we had in Euxinograd with our Romanian partners," the Greek Prime Minister stressed.

Today's visit of PM Denkov to the Greek capital takes place less than three months after the trilateral meeting between the Prime Ministers of Bulgaria, Greece and Romania, which Bulgaria hosted in October last year in Euxinograd. At the time, they agreed to work together to strengthen regional connectivity and adopted a joint declaration on the development of transport, energy and digital connectivity between the three countries.

The Prime Minister of our southern neighbour congratulated Bulgaria on the decision of the Council of the European Union at the end of March this year to abolish the control of air and sea borders with the Schengen countries.

"We expect Schengen to be fully applicable, including for land borders, which are so important for our bilateral relations and economic trade," Mitsotakis added.

He pointed out that the visit of PM Denkov is the first official visit to Greece in 2024 and this speaks for the quality of bilateral relations.

After the face-to-face meeting between the two Prime Ministers, a working lunch was held, which was also attended by Bulgaria’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mariya Gabriel; Finance Minister Assen Vassilev; Environment and Water Minister Yulian Popov and Energy Minister Rumen Radev.
