The European Commission has approved the addition of Bulgarian brine cheese to the EU list of protected geographical indications. It thus joins the list of nearly 1,650 protected products.
The registration will give processors a competitive advantage on the market and consumers an additional guarantee of the origin and quality of the product.
Earlier this month, Bulgarian yoghurt was entered in the European Register of Protected Designations of Origin. This makes the brine cheese the third Bulgarian product to be registered as a protected designation of origin at European level, after ’Strandzha honeydew honey' and the Bulgarian yoghurt.
