Police officers arrested a man from Sofia for illegal possession of birds from protected species.
The case came to light after a tip-off. A police team, in the presence of an ornithologist from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, searched a home in the residential area of "Filipovtsi" in Sofia.
Within the operational actions, a total of 54 birds of various protected species were found - 27 of the species of caddis (shoveler), 13 of the species of greenfinch, 7 - Eurasian siskin, 5 - Common linnet, blackbird and one Eurasian chaffinch.
All animals were found to be confined in small cages and kept in inadequate conditions. Numerous cages and nets for catching wild birds were also seized.
The 21-year-old man was arrested on a police warrant for up to 24 hours. Pre-trial proceedings under Article 278 of the Criminal Code have been initiated in the case.
