President Radev held consultations with the largest parliamentary group GERB-UDF

Bulgaria needs a stable government as soon as possible, and it seems that the voters have given this responsibility to GERB-UDF, Bulgaria’s President Rumen Radev said to the representatives of the largest parliamentary party at the consultations on April 20 before handing over the first mandate for forming a government. GERB-UDF representatives in the meeting were the party leader Boyko Borissov; MP Tomislav Donchev and floor leader Desislava Atanasova.

"We all know that the first political force in Parliament bears the greatest responsibility for forming a government and a government should be formed as quickly as possible and with the widest parliamentary support in the conditions of war and political crisis. You also have the responsibility for urgent tasks that have been postponed by several parliaments - the bills on the Recovery and Resilience Plan, Schengen, the eurozone and Budget 2023," the President said.

Radev asked GERB-UDF how long they intend to negotiate with We Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria and whether they have a backup option if they do not agree on a government with them. He also raised the issue of the need to urgently adopt Budget 2023.

GERB leader Boyko Borissov responded that the voters had said "We cannot do without GERB", but they had not said that although being first, GERB should govern alone. According to the party, the most stable and secure government, able to do the urgent tasks and in a very short time, is a government with We Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria. Borissov expressed optimism that this is possible. He also assured that as a party, GERB will act responsibly and will not allow the state to go bankrupt.

"It is always possible to find another option, but it will neither be stable nor long-term, nor will it improve Bulgaria's prospects. We are responsible and we will not leave the country in bankruptcy and financial collapse in June. That is why we are trying to be responsible - we are making efforts, we are patient. The MPs from both coalitions are extremely unanimous and all this must not be played out just to avoid losing a few voters. If Bulgaria is above everything, if all that you heard in declarations (pre-election) is true, there is a chance to do something stable and with your help this will happen," Borissov said.

GERB-UDF asked the head of state whether the caretaker cabinet would be able to submit to the 49th Parliament the few bills that remain in relation to the Recovery and Resilience Plan. Radev replied that they would be submitted on time.

According to GERB-UDF floor leader, Dessislava Atanasova, if they have support from other political forces, the urgent bills could be adopted within two or three weeks after the parliamentary committees are formed.
