The largest high-tech space science laboratory in the country was opened at the Naval Academy in Bulgaria’s coastal city of Varna. on February 26
It has state-of-the-art equipment, which includes a desktop satellite that is used to simulate and create space missions. The aim of the laboratory is to create real space specialists, starting in the autumn with a new master's programme in space engineering and technology. The equipment, software and satellite were all donated by a private company. The lab also provides 50 jobs.
"On the roof of the academy there are ground stations, satellite stations. They already communicate with satellites in low earth orbit. So everything you see here is created with the aim of practically building the future of space research in Bulgaria," said Raicho Raichev, benefactor.
"For the Navy, this is a huge step forward. I would compare it to what Armstrong said about stepping on the moon, because this takes us to a completely different dimension," said Navy Commander, Rear Admiral Kiril Mihailov.
