Two bear cubs rescued in Sofia region are placed in the Bear Sanctuary in Belitsa

Two bear cubs rescued in the Sofia region are temporarily accommodated in the Bear Sanctuary near Belitsa. The baby bears were rescued in a joint action of the Ministry of Environment and Water, the nature conservation organization WWF and the Four Paws Foundation.

The bear cubs were found after a signal from local people, they were motherless and roaming around alone, said the park manager Dimitar Ivanov.

One of the cubs was placed in the Bear Sanctuary two weeks ago and the second one has been sheltered there for two days.

One of the bear cubs has already undergone a medical examination, the results showed that its health is good, and has a chip, the bear sanctuary manager explained. The second bear is about to undergo the same procedure.

"We reunited them, they recognised each other, they are happy to be together again," Dimitar Ivanov added.

He pointed out that the care for the bears includes a diet in line with their age and weight, following the guidelines of the Greek centre Arcturus, where they are to be sent for rehabilitation.

The centre specialises in providing a life close to that of bears in the wild, and after the adaptation period, the cubs will have the opportunity to return to the wild.

Bear cubs left without a mother have no chance of surviving in the wild. In general, we are trying not to lose brown bear individuals in the wild population," Dimitar Ivanov said.

The cubs will remain in the park until the documents are prepared to transport them to Greece, where they will undergo the adaptation process.

For the second time this year, the bear sanctuary near Belitsa is temporarily hosting a rescued bear cub that was left without a mother.

The bear rescued in the village of Kostenets will be returned to the wild once it gets in better condition.

In the summer, a bear aged about four months was spotted near Kostenets and rescued by forestry officials with the help of WWF staff. The bear, named Nikola, was sent to the Greek centre "Arcturus" with the assistance of the Ministry of Environment.
